Spencer from Stump X & Drain recently helped a homeowner named Mark in Layton, UT, who was dealing with two major headaches: buried drain issues and a persistent stump that wouldn’t die. Here’s a look at how we tackled both problems with our carefully planned site visit.
Underground Drain Fixes and Rerouting
The biggest concern for Mark was water pooling near the house’s foundation, especially on the northwest side. Our team began by rerouting the downspout drain on that side of the home, extending it 20 feet out into the yard and installing a proper drain basin. This helps redirect water far enough away from the home to protect the structure and foundation over the long term.
We also capped off a T-connection on the front drain and rerouted it to tie into an existing clean-out. This eliminated unnecessary flow paths that were slowing down drainage and clogging the system during heavy rains.
Emitter Upgrades and Clean-outs
One of the more common problems we see in Layton homes is aging or missing emitters. Mark’s property had four that were no longer effective. We replaced all four with new clean-out basins that make future servicing faster and easier.
Once the ground thaws later this season, we’ll return to swap out one more emitter and install a T fitting on the downspout at the driveway’s south corner. We always design our work for future access—these clean-outs let us hydro-jet and maintain lines more efficiently down the road.

Hydro-jetting for Drain Performance
Speaking of hydro-jetting, Mark asked us to pressure-clean the underground drainage system. We hydro-jetted multiple drains around the property, blasting out debris, dirt, and root intrusion using high-pressure water.
This step is especially important for older properties in Layton, where years of sediment and plant growth can clog up your underground lines without warning.
Bush Removal, Stump Poisoning, and Grinding
Drainage wasn’t the only thing slowing Mark’s yard down. Out front, there was a stubborn bush growing too close to the house. We cut it back, poisoned the stump to prevent regrowth, and followed up with full stump grinding to clean the area completely.
Poisoning before grinding is a key step to ensuring the roots don’t keep sprouting. It’s a method we’ve refined over time—and it’s especially useful in areas where regrowth could interfere with drain lines or hardscape.
Breaking Out Concrete for New Fence Post
Mark also asked us to prep a space near the water spigot for a new fence post. This meant carefully breaking out concrete and cleaning up the area around the downspout attachments nearby.
While it sounds like a small job, it’s a perfect example of how drainage and landscaping projects often overlap. We approach them with care to avoid any future water or structural issues.
Final Thoughts from the Job Site
For Mark, the combination of rerouted drainage, new clean-outs, complete stump removal, and smart prep for future work all added up to a property that’s easier to manage and more protected from damage.
