At Stump X & Drain, we recently had the opportunity to assist a homeowner in Highland, Utah who needed professional stump grinding and root removal in their backyard. Spencer, our lead contractor, took on this job with precision and care, ensuring everything was handled quickly and cleanly without damaging the surrounding lawn or landscape.
The project included grinding down two sizable stumps—one measuring 28 inches in diameter and the other 20 inches. In addition to the stumps, the customer requested root chasing, which involves tracing and grinding the lateral roots that had started spreading underground. This is an essential part of the process when you want to replant, lay sod, or simply avoid regrowth from the remaining tree system.

As shown in the image above, the base of the largest stump was wide and irregularly shaped, which made it even more important to have the right equipment and expertise on site. Our specialized grinding machinery handled it efficiently, getting well below the surface grade to eliminate future obstacles for planting or landscaping.
Once the stumps were ground, we tackled the root chasing portion of the job. These roots can often reach 10 to 15 feet from the base, weaving beneath turf and flowerbeds. Spencer took care to follow them carefully and grind them down without disturbing the nearby structures or yard features.

At the end of the job, all that’s left is a smooth mulch pile, perfect for composting or garden use. We always leave the yard clean and tidy, so the homeowner doesn’t have to worry about cleanup. If requested, we also offer mulch removal and leveling services, depending on the client’s plans for the space.
This particular client was preparing the area for new landscaping, and removing these two large stumps—along with the extended roots—was the first crucial step. Without a thorough grinding and root chasing process, old roots can interfere with future planting or even create safety hazards when mowing or gardening.
What sets Stump X & Drain apart is our attention to detail and our ability to take on stumps of any size. Whether you’re dealing with a 28” behemoth or a more manageable 20” base, we approach each job with the same level of professionalism and care. And in a place like Highland, where yards are often sloped or close to fences and foundations, precision matters.
As always, we offer upfront consultation and make sure the job is scoped correctly from the start. You won’t have to worry about hidden costs or surprises—just straightforward, dependable service from people who take pride in what they do.
